NZ flag on ISIS video

Quran 3:151. We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve…

The four minute video And No Respite appeared on the al-Ḥayat Media Centre website – the media arm of Isis. It included New Zealand among 60 flags representing “the global coalition against the Islamic State”.

Prime Minister John Key says he is not aware of any new threats toward New Zealand after our flag was shown on an Islamic State video targeting members of the “global coalition”.

Key said the  video was an attempt by the terrorist group “to undermine the confidence of any nation that stands up to them”, of which New Zealand was one of over 60.

“That said I am not aware of any new specific threat toward New Zealand as a result of the video’s release.”

The Islamic State video has been posted showing New Zealand’s flag listed among the “global coalition” against the group, but with no specific reference to New Zealand.

The four minute video And No Respite appeared on the al-Ḥayat Media Centre website – the media arm of Isis. It included New Zealand among 60 flags representing “the global coalition against the Islamic State”.

It was mostly aimed at United States, highlighting suicides among returning troops, and claims the Isis “Caliphate” in Syria and Iraq is already bigger than Great Britain.

It includes a call to the coalition to gather together, plot against them, show them no respite and “bring it on” to echo the words of the prophets.

“Our ally is the greatest, he is Allah.”

It ends with a quote from the Koran: “So resolve upon your plan, and call upon your associates. Then let not your plan be obscure to you. Then carry it out upon me and do not show me respite.”

New Zealand has sent 140 troops to help train the Iraqi army. Most are based at Camp Taji military base north-west of Baghdad.

Prime Minister John Key visited the troops in early October.

The Government has revealed it has a handful of IS sympathisers under 24 hour watch in New Zealand.

Last week, the United States issued a global travel alert about the heightened risk of a terrorist attack.

New Zealand’s risk level has not been raised recently.

Key said Friday the indiscriminate nature of ISIL terrorist acts meant New Zealanders overseas should exercise reasonable caution, take notice of Government information in the countries they are in and keep aware of travel advice through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade safe travel website.
